The military operation known as “Operation Liberation” (also referred to as the Vadamarachchi Operation) was launched by the Sri Lankan military on May 26, 1987, from Thondaimanaru in the Vadamarachchi region of Jaffna, including Valvettithurai, with the aim of recapturing the area from the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The operation is regarded as the first large-scale conventional military campaign carried out by the Sri Lankan military after the British colonial era, and also the first major military offensive launched against the LTTE.
Following the commencement of the operation, residents from several villages including Thondaimanaru, Valvettithurai and Uduppiddy were displaced and moved eastwards, with many seeking refuge in areas such as Nelliyady, Puttalai and parts of Thenmarachchi.Although the military operation began on May 26, the areas of Valvettithurai and Uduppiddy came under military control only on May 28.
During the operation, Sri Lankan state media, at that time, reported that Soosai, who was then said to be the LTTE’s Vadamarachchi regional leader, narrowly escaped death.
The LTTE later announced that five of its members, including a senior member from Valvettithurai identified as Nadanasigamani Packiyalingam, known as “Alan”, and another member known as “Veeman” from Point Pedro, were killed during the fighting. A member identified as “Siva” from Valvettithurai was also reported among the dead.
