“Thaipongal” air kite competition organized by “Valvai Vikneswara community Centre’ held at Valvettithurai, Jaffna on 15th Jan 2019, witnessing participation thousands of people from various parts of Jaffna Peninsula.
The event headed by Mr.V.Kavichelvan (President of the Community Centre) commenced at about 1430 hours, where Mr.Vethanajagan (Government Agent, Jaffna) and Mr.Sathyaseelan (Secretary - Ministry of Youth) participated as Chief Guest and Former Northern provincial council member Mr.M.K.Sivajilingam and Valvettithurai Urban Council Chairman Mr.Karunanatharasa participated as special guests.
In addition to Kite competition, the event continued with a musical show. Over 80 kites of various designs and multiple colors beautified the sky
It may be noted that on last year more 50 kites of all shapes, colours, sizes with various dimensions had taken part in the competition.
Moderate wind resulted from prevailed northeast monsoon favored most of the kites to fly successfully.
The 'Modern Kitchen' secured the first place in the competition. The kite was designed by Mr.Mahenthiran, who has won the first prize in the past 3 years
The kite competition has grown over the past 8 years because of the support of participants and increasing number of spectators not only from local but also from all over the Peninsula.
