Detained Tamil Rapper Sangeethan Ganeshkumar Released on Bail, Thanks President and Jaffna MP

Tamil rapper and spoken-word artist Sangeethan Ganeshkumar, popularly known as HipHop Sangee, was released on bail today after being held in remand custody following his arrest under Sri Lanka's Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
Following his release, Sangeethan expressed his gratitude to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Jaffna District Parliamentarian Ilankumaran for their support and efforts in relation to his release.
Sangeethan was arrested on June 2 on allegations that his songs glorified the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. He remained in judicial custody until being granted bail today. The arrest sparked widespread protests across the Northern Province, including in Valvettithurai, where activists and members of the public staged demonstrations demanding his release despite various challenges and pressures.

The case also drew international attention. Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, strongly condemned the arrest and called for respect for freedom of expression.
Sangeethan's detention generated significant debate regarding artistic freedom and the use of the PTA, with supporters arguing that creative and cultural expression should not be criminalized. His release on bail marks a significant development in a case that attracted attention both locally and internationally.
