Baobab tree in Delft Island
One huge Baobab trees (Adansonia digitatal), (‘Peruku Maram’ in Tamil and ‘Ali gas’ in Sinhalese) is found in Neduntievu (Delft Island) and one more is found in Pallimunai, Mannar. These two are the oldest, largest and huge Baobab trees found in Sri Lanka.
This tree, amazingly found on the island of Delft stands isolated in its splendor. A Note attached to this tree indicates that the tree has been brought by seafaring Arab Traders to Sri Lanka, around 700 AD, in order to feed camels. Baobab trees — whose leaves were used to feed these animals. Monkeys love the fruit of this tree and hence this tree sometimes called as the Monkey-bread tree
Baobab trees are the longest-lived species on earth. These trees, also known as ‘Upside-down trees’ are so named because their sparse foliage and meagre crowns give the trees the appearance of bearing roots instead of branches. Baobab trees are tall (up to 30m) and have enormous, swollen trunks, in which they store water during the dry season. Each trunk can store up to 120,000 liters of water.
The oldest and the largest individual Baobab tree in Sri Lanka is found at Pallimunai and is reported to be over 700 years old.
நெடுந்தீவின் வரலாற்றுச் சின்னம் - பெருக்கு மரம்
படத்தில் காணப்படுவது பல நூறு வருடங்களைக் கடந்துள்ள Baobab tree எனப்படும் யாழின் நெடுந்தீவில் உள்ள பெருக்கு மரம் ஆகும். இதையொத்த 700 வருடங்கள் பழமையான இன்னொமொரு பெருக்கு மரம் மன்னார் பகுதியில் உள்ள பள்ளிமுனையில் அமைந்துள்ளது.
அரேபிய மாலுமிகளால் ஒட்டகங்களின் உணவுத் தேவையை பூர்த்தி செய்வதற்காக இது கொண்டு வரப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என இந்த மரத்தின் மீது உள்ள குறிப்பு தெரிவிக்கின்றது. இந்த மரத்தின் பழங்களை குரங்குகளும் விரும்பி உண்ணுகின்றன.
சுமார் 30 மீட்டர் உயரம் வரை வளரக் கூடிய இந்த மரத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு கிளைகளும் சுமார் 120,000 லீட்டர் வரையான நீரை வரட்சி காலங்களில் தேக்கி வைக்கக்கூடியவை ஆகும்.

Historical ancient pond
Photo shows a historical ancient pond located at Thondamanaru, Jaffna. The pond has been made by cutting the rocks, where plenty of fresh water is present at a deep of 3, 4 feet.
The locals are using this pond all the way in their life; however the history of the pond is not exactly known now, due to the fact that the note which showed the history had allegedly been taken by some university students for their further studies,
Even though the locals well aware of this pond, but it never drew attention of others, since it is located in a covered area.
Location – Karumpaazhai, about 800m -1000m from Thondamanaru junction, along the Thondamanaru – Vallai road, left side of the road while heading to Vallai, adjacent to Vellankarai cemetery.

கரும்பாழி புராதன குளம்
படத்தில் காணப்படுவது புராதான குளம் ஒன்றாகும். இது தொண்டைமனாற்றுப் பகுதியில் தொண்டைமனாறு - வல்லை வீதியில் கரும்பாழி என்னும் பகுதியில் வெல்லங்கராய் சுடலைக்கு அண்மையில் அமைந்துள்ளது. நீர்மட்டம் மிகவும் உயர்ந்த மிகவும் கற்பாறைகளைக் கொண்டுள்ள பகுதியில் செயற்கையாக மிகவும் நேர்த்தியாக அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
உள்ளூர் மக்களால் நெடுங்காலமாக இக்குளம் தற்பொழுதும் பாவிக்கப்பட்டுவருகின்றது. மேலும் இப்பகுதிகளில் வளர்க்கப்படும் கால்நடைகளிற்கும் இக்குளத்திலுள்ள நீர் பாவிக்கப்பட்டுவருகின்றது.
உள்ளூர் வாசிகளின் தகவல்களின் படி, சுமார் 2 வருடங்கள் முன்பு இக்குளம் பற்றிய ஆய்வினை மேற்கொள்ள வந்திருந்த சில பல்கலைகழக மாணவர்கள் இப்பகுதியில் இக்குளம் பற்றி வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கல்வெட்டினை அகற்ற முற்பட்டதாகவும், உள்ளூர் வாசிகள் இதைத்தடுத்ததாயும், ஆனாலும் சம்பவத்திற்கு மறு நாள் குறித்த கல்வெட்டு மாயாமாகி விட்டதாயும் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.

படத்தில் காணப்படுவது வல்வெட்டித்துறை மயிலியதனை கடற்பரப்பில் காணப்பட்ட சிறிய பாய்மரக் கட்டுமரம் ஆகும். பல பகுதிகளில் பாய்மரங்களின் பாவனை தற்பொழுது இருந்து வருகின்றபோதும், யாழ்பாணத்தில் இதன் பாவனை மிகவும் குறைந்துவருகின்றது.
பாய்மரத்தைப் பாவிப்பதற்கு குறிப்பிடக்கூடிய அறிவு மற்றும் அனுபவம் தேவை. வல்வெட்டித்துறையிலிருந்து அமெரிக்காவின் Gloucester துறைமுகத்தைச் சென்றடைந்திருந்த, வல்வெட்டித்துறையில் செய்யப்பட்டிருந்த அன்னபூரணி எனப்படும் பாய்மரக்கப்பல் கடந்த 02/08/2013 தனது 75 வருடத்தைக் பூர்த்தி செய்திருந்தமை இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

படத்தில் காணப்படுவது சுமார் 100 வருடங்கள் பழமையான, வல்வெட்டித்துறை சிவன் கோவிலின் மேற்குப் புறத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு மடம் ஆகும். இந்த மடத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியில் முன்னர் இயற்றமிழ் போதகாசிரியர் வயித்தியலிங்கப்பிள்ளை புலவர் அவர்களால் தமிழ் மற்றும் சைவம் சம்பந்தமான விடயங்களை வெளியிடும் அச்சகம் ஒன்று நடாத்தப்பட்டு வந்திருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
